Web and FTP servers.

Many companies are now trying to email bigger attachments and they are being rejected. Many ISP's (internet service providers) only allow a maximum of 5 megs attachments so what is the average businesses to do?

An ftp (file transfer protocol) server is just a computer that sits in your office that allows for users anywhere in the world to log into the system and upload/download files for your company. They have to log in so it is secure but there are no restrictions on the sizes of files that can be transferred so the email restrictions don't matter anymore. Many drafting offices are using these systems now just for the fact that some CAD drawings can be up to 50 megs and more, it's very useful.

FTP can be run natively in windows, tho I don't recommend it. You can also use free windows based ftp server programs that are much more secure. The linux ftp offers complete security with little resources, vsftp comes with the operating system and is easily set up.

The web server can be run on the same server and while it can host your website, it doesn't have to. There are many useful php scripts and web applications that can be run from the linux server as well. You can install anything from project management, contact applications or full blown accounting applications. The sky is the limit. Since it doesn't need to be on the internet and security isn't an issue. Many small businesses are benefitting from having both ftp and web server on site as cheap solutions.

I've set up many running linux just for it being more secure, fast and stable for the coming years. It's a great little system.Thanks.

Thank you.
